Challenge

Alex Crow had been teaching yoga, embodiment, and ritual for over a decade — a Government of India–certified Yoga Therapist with hundreds of hours of training across Vinyasa, Yin, and Yoga Nidra, and a path that had since opened into longer apprenticeships in shamanic studies with Liv Mokai Wheeler and the Kontomble, internal martial arts under Brea Fisher's Quan Yin Gongfu lineage, Cha Dao through Global Tea Hut, and ongoing prayer with Mexica and Lakota elders. The practice she was carrying was deep, plural, and explicitly held within other people's traditions.

Her public presence did not reflect any of that. The site spoke to who she had been when she was primarily a yoga teacher, not who she was becoming as a student-of-lineages preparing to launch her own elemental earth school, an apothecary, and a body of teaching that drew openly on traditions she had been entrusted with. While working together, we explored how to give her work a public form that honored the lineages it came from without flattening or claiming them as her own.

Opportunity

The work began with several months of conversation. We mapped out exactly what Alex was teaching, what she was selling, and what she was holding privately with longtime students. We established Grounded Crown as the home for her core offerings: Homecoming, an elemental earth school taught across a year, would sit inside it, the Tree Temple Apothecary, and her personalized rituals.

From there we built the system. A custom typeface "Sawubona", named after the Zulu greeting I see you was drawn from Alex's own handwriting and the cadence of ancient manuscript calligraphy. The two-birds we had designed for her 2 years before logo was softened, set inside a circle to read as a ripple, and paired with the new script. A set of illustrated symbols (dragon, snake, ripple, pinecone, treasure, sunflower seed) was developed in collaboration with Alex from the energies she named as central to the work. New symbols for the five Chinese elements, a full-body diagram of the meridians, and a central image for Homecoming showing a single figure moving through the elements in qigong form were drawn for the curriculum itself.

The site was built across ten pages on Squarespace, structured to hold the school, the apothecary, the free resources, and Alex's public-facing teaching as distinct entry points into one practice. Photography was directed with Marisa Franco on location. The resulting images were layered with the illustrated symbols to produce a series of collages that became the visual signature of the launch. A 31-page guideline document and a set of Canva templates were delivered so the system could be extended by Alex herself without losing its coherence. Throughout the build, lineage credits — to her teachers, the traditions her studies came from, and the source of Sawubona — were treated as load-bearing copy rather than acknowledgments tucked into a footer.

Outcome

It was the right idea at the right time. The first cohort of Homecoming sold out. Tree Temple Apothecary launched alongside it with its first product, a copal mist, in distribution. What changed for Alex was significant. Our engagement gave the practice a public form equal to the years behind it. She gained significant traction and support publicly, and her Homecoming school connected her with impressive teachers worldwide.
